volleyball teams or cheerleading squads, forget it. Not that there’s
any doubt that Remy—sorry, U.S. Girls—couldn’t rise and conquer either challenge.
Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, U.S. Girls’
approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting; lithe,
lysergic gamma rays of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk sort
of resemble Diamanda Galás reinterpreting Suicide’s Red Star. And dig
that cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Prove It All Night,” done in such an
effortless, barbital lush you’d swear the air was filled with mescaline.

ASA IRONS (US, Important)
Asa Irons is a backwoods legend, he has pretty much singlehandedly defined a style of new folk music specific to New England. He released a solo album on Important Records some years ago, and is currently working on another. He has played in the folk supergroup Feathers and also in stoner-rock legends Witch featuring J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.
“Asa Irons’ voice says it all, a prime example of what the word ‘music’ means in Hindi: ‘that which breaks the silence.’”

KURT WEISMAN (US, Important)
Kurt Weisman was also a member of Feathers and recently released a solo album, also on Important Records, titled “Spiritual Sci-Fi”. It’s a masterpiece of songcraft and complex, creative production very much beyond definition. As a solo performer he plays gently and freely meandering through folk and country familiarity with a sweet and unique presence.

MICAH BLUE SMALDONE (US, Thrill Jockey/Immune)
Micah Blue Smaldone’s third full length album “The Red River”, released my Immune / Thrill Jockey, was mostly written upon returning from an 11 week European tour in the winter of 2007. The album confronts the malevolence we’ve come to accept in our nature perhaps more out of cynicism than of true understanding. It tells hard tales gently, and in the end offers faith in our capacity for goodness. Micah also plays in the Portland, Maine band Fire on Fire, featuring members of Cerberus Shoal and released on Young God Records. Occasionally he plays in Death Vessel. He has recently appeared on recordings with Jack Rose, Honest Jon’s Open Strings compilation, and a live appearance at VPRO Dwars Festival in Amsterdam.

Patton, Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, John Fahey, Robbie

Spekulativ italiensk chockumentär om det syndiga livet och konstiga sedvänjor i 60-talets Sverige!
I denna typiska mondofilm presenteras i mer eller mindre fejkade scener typiskt svenska företeelser som lesbiska nattklubbar, porrfilm, sexualundervisning för tonåringar, lapplisor som extraknäcker som nakenmodeller, tjejband som spelar topless, vilt valborgsfirande, elaka raggare, knark, alkoholproblem och självmord.
Sweden Heaven and Hell vållade enorma protester i Sverige när den hårt nerklippt visades i TV 1971.
Detta är filmen där låten ”Mah-na-Mah-na” introducerades. Sången fick sedan sitt stora genombrott tack vare Mupparna! Det hävdas att Giorgio Moroder sjunger på filmens soundtrack!
Regissören Luigi Scattini står även bakom klassiker som Sexy Magico, Witchcraft ’70 och Primitive Love (med Jayne Mansfield).

Typical mondo movie with more or less fake scenes, depicting typical Swedish habits like lesbian night clubs, sex education for teenagers, meter maids moonlighting as nude models, topless girl bands, evil bikers, drugs, alcohol and suicide.
The soundtrack features the song ”Mah-na-Mah-na”, later a hit in The Muppet Show!
The director Luigi Scattini also made Sexy Magico, Witchcraft ’70 and Primitive Love (with Jayne Mansfield).

MARS AND BEYOND - Ward Kimball (1957)
Rare Walt Disney Space series from 1957, speculating about Mars. Remember,more then 50 years ago, only Sputnik had gone up 2 months earlier!
Walt does the intro to the 6 part program, leading into talk about Man’s history of looking up into the sky. Really includes a history of knowledge and science. Great, almost un-Disney-like animation.
