RAFAEL TORAL (Lissabon, Staubgold/Tomlab/Touch)
Toral plays experimental electronic instruments. Strongly interested in
phrasing, he calls his style “post-free jazz electronic music”, once
described as “a brand of electronic music far more visceral and emotive
than that of his cerebral peers”. Toral’s innovative Space Program,
while researching performance possibilities, delivers music that is
full of clarity, articulating silence and sound in a thoughtful, yet
Formerly known for his drone/ ambient work with
guitar and electronics and acclaimed records such as Wave Field (1994)
or Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance (2000), in 2003 he
decided to completely renew his approach to music, launching the Space
Program in 2004.
Solo 1 in 2007 and Space Elements Vol. I in 2008. Also in 2008
premiered the Space Collective, a slowly developing orchestral group.< the course of his work, collaborating with other musicians has been a
decisive factor in learning and development. Among these, the most
important is a long time connection with Sei Miguel (since 1993),
Portuguese master of avant-Jazz, a key figure in the development of the
Space program. In 1998 Rafael became a member of MIMEO electronic
orchestra, a forum where surprising and uncontrollable events take
place. Often described as a 'supergroup', its other members are Keith
Rowe, Thomas Lehn, Kaffe Matthews, Marcus Schmickler, Jérome Noetinger,
Christian Fennesz, Peter Rehberg, Gert-Jan Prins, Cor Fuhler and Phil
Durrant. Throughout his path, Rafael Toral has kept collaborating with
other people, among which are Jim O'Rourke, Evan Parker, John Edwards,
Joe Morris, Tatsuya Nakatani, Manuel Mota, Roger Turner, David Toop,
Alvin Lucier, John Zorn, Phill Niblock, Christian Marclay, Sonic Youth,
João Paulo Feliciano, Rhys Chatham, Lee Ranaldo, C Spencer Yeh, Trevor
Tremaine, Dean Roberts and many others.
An artist as well, he
had activity in visual and spatial arts, having produced video and
several installations from 1994 to 2003. The demanding Space Program
called for suspending this output for fully focusing on music.
Rafael Toral has performed throughout Europe, Canada, USA, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

FROST & FIRE is the new solo project of musician Matteo Gambacorta.
Originally from a small town set in the foothills of the italian Alps,
Matteo now lives in Gothenburg and is actively involved in the local
music scene playing in different bands (Spiders and Bow&Arrow) and
collaborating with a number of clubs and venues.
FROST & FIRE`s music is mainly instrumental acoustic guitar. A mixture of
american Raga-Folk (a musical genre pioneered in the 1960s by famous
finger-picking masters as John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker etc.)
and 1960s British Folk Revival folk guitarists as Bert Jansch, Robin
Williamson and Davy Graham.
Elements of renaissance lute music,
indian and middle-east free improvisation and drone minimalism are also
present in the music of FROST & FIRE.
from 2000 to 2006, Matteo was at the head of the italian
indiefolk/alt.country band MIDWEST, recording and touring in Italy and
The debut album, released in 2002 and titled Town &
Country, succesfully introduced them to the european indierock scene,
receiving great reviews from magazines and newspapers. In particular,
the english press (Mojo, Uncut, Time Out, The Sunday Times, The Sunday
Telegraph and others) noticed the band as one of the most promising
european indiefolk acts. A second record followed in 2005, named
Whatever You Bring We Sing. Influenced by the attitude and sound of the
late 60s, the album again revealed the different aspects of Midwest’s
music, acoustic and traditional yet melodic and experimental.
